Bathroom Design Tips Choosing Lighting and Heating

Good practical lighting is essential for shaving and applying make-up, but atmospheric lighting should also play a role in your bathroom lighting scheme. As the bathroom is often the only place in the family home where you can lock the door and truly have some privacy, a lighting scheme that is conducive to leisurely bathing is a wonderful luxury. You may need to install two separately controlled lighting facilities to fulfil both requirements. Lighting your bathroom To fulfil your practical lighting requirements, you will need good task lighting, perhaps provided by directional spotlights positioned around a generous-sized mirror. Wall lights are a good alternative.

The general lighting in the bathroom can be supplied by a single pendant light, or a series of spotlights recessed into the ceiling. Install this type of lighting with the controls positioned outside the bathroom, so that you can fit them with a dimmer switch. This way you can dim the lights if you want to have a leisurely soak in the bathtub. Arrange some night lights and candles around the edges of the tub to enhance the atmosphere even more, but remove them before children use the room. Tiny spotlights are available that can be installed in a random pattern on the ceiling; they look like stars in the night sky when turned down low using a dimmer switch, producing a relaxing and almost hypnotic ambience.

Heating your bathroom Most bathrooms are heated by a small radiator which can also be used as a warming area for towels. The only disadvantages are the appearance of normal domestic radiators and the wall space they take up within the room. Specialist radiators are available for bathrooms; they are often beautifully designed and aesthetically pleasing, but they can be costly. If you are thinking of a new plumbing layout for the healing of your bathroom, consider installing a healed towel rail. Electrically healed rails are also available if your central heating system is already in place and you do not wish to change it.
